Collisions between freight trains and trucks are capable of causing massive damage. The impact of the crash could hurt or kill anyone inside the train or the truck. Bystanders could also face a risk, particularly if the accident touches off a fire or the release of hazardous materials. When this this type of collision occurred March 10 in Somerset County, three people were hurt, but fortunately avoided critical injuries.
The crash involving a CSX train and a tri-axle coal truck in Friedens occurred just before 3 p.m. near the intersection of Route 281 and Culligan Road. Emergency crews, including a hazmat unit, responded to the scene. When the coal truck burst into flames, quick-thinking bystanders extinguished the fire and rescued the truck driver. He was taken to the hospital along with two train workers.
Local traffic was detoured for an extended period of time to clear up debris from the truck fire, ensure that nothing had leaked from the train tanks as a result of the derailment and conduct an investigation into how the accident occurred. Possible factors in these types of crashes include the following:
Signal and gate malfunctions — Several safety measures are supposed to be in place to reduce the risk of a collision. Faulty crossing gates, lights or warning signals can lead a driver to travel across the tracks without being aware of the danger.
Negligence of the train engineer or motorist — An engineer who is operating a train at too high a speed might lack the control they need to avoid a collision. Likewise, there are situations where a motorist ignores warnings and incorrectly assumes that they can clear the crossing before being struck.
Obstructed visibility — Overgrown grass and other obstacles near railroad tracks sometimes makes it difficult for drivers to see an approaching train.
Vehicle problems — Brakes that don’t work or other mechanical problems might make it difficult to avoid an accident.
Distracted driving — Using a phone, adjusting the radio or other distractions can cause engineers and drivers to miss critical warnings.
Whatever specific factors contributed to the vehicle collision where you or a family member was hurt, finding a lawyer who can help you obtain the compensation you deserve is critical.
